Gold, wine, and a Victorian railway. All of them on this street.
In August 1862 two prospectors walked into Dunedin carrying eighty-seven pounds of gold from the Clutha. Forty thousand miners followed within the year. Sunderland Street is the first street they built.
Two years on, a Frenchman named Féraud planted vines up the road and accidentally started the South Island's wine industry. His café still trades on this street under his name.
A century on, the railway closed. That railway bed is now the Otago Central Rail Trail: 152 kilometres east to Middlemarch, starting at the end of the block.
